O2 History

O2 is a leading provider of mobile services to consumers and businesses in the UK. It is the leader in non-voice services, including text, media messaging, games, music and video, as well as data connections via GPRS, 3G and WLAN.

O2 UK is part of the wider O2 group which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Teleonica S.A. O2 comprises mobile network operators in the UK and Ireland, along with integrated fixed/mobile businesses in Germany, the Czech Republic (Telefónica O2 Czech Republic) and the Isle of Man (Manx Telecom). It also owns 50 percent of the Tesco Mobile and Tchibo Mobilfunk, joint venture businesses in the UK and Germany respectively.

In addition, O2 includes O2 Airwave, which supplies secure digital communications to the emergency services, including the Police, Ambulance and Fire, as well as other public safety organisations.

O2 was formed in 2001 following the demerger from British Telecom of its former mobile business, BT Wireless.

O2 UK Recycling Your Mobile

Mobile phones and accessories contain tiny amounts of precious metals such as gold and silver, as well as other metals such as copper and iron, which are reclaimed during the recycling process. This prevents these mobile phones from clogging up landfill sites.

Mobile phone batteries and LCD screens contain hazardous substances which could escape and cause harm to the environment unless they are correctly disposed of.

The O2 UK Recycling Scheme ensures that these batteries are safely treated while also allowing metals and substances, such as nickel, to be recycled back into productive use. Rather than paper manuals, cardboard packing, plastics and plastic packaging ending up in landfill, the O2 Recycling Scheme diverts these plastics for recycling or for the creation of energy through incineration.

Help communication in developing countries

Your unwanted mobile phone could be sent to developing countries and re-used. This means that many people outside Europe can get a mobile phone when they otherwise may not be able to afford it.

Raise money for charity

We will make a donation to our environmental charity Rainforest Concern for every mobile phone that is suitable for re-use.

O2 UK Help to protect the environment

There are over 40 million mobile phone owners in the UK and most people change their mobile phone every two or three years if not more often. That's a lot of mobile phones and accessories thrown into landfill sites that could be recycled. Help by handing in your old mobile phone and equipment to your nearest O2 UK stores and if it can't be re-used or recycled we'll make sure that it is disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

O2 UK Safer Driving Tips

Virtually indispensable for many, we all recognise the vital role your mobile phone can play in many kinds of emergency, while their convenience and ease of use is good news, both for socialising and business productivity. At O2 we're naturally great believers in the benefits of fast, efficient communications that reward your attention wherever you are. But, and it is a big but, we really don't want you to talk yourself into trouble.

At O2, we'd ask for your support to bring an end to the potentially dangerous situation that occurs when a motorist tries to drive and make a mobile phone call at the same time. Not only is this dangerous, it is also illegal. On 1st December 2003, it became an offence to hold or cradle in your neck, a mobile phone at any point during the set up, making or taking of a phone call, text message or any other data related communication. The use of fully-installed handsfree car kits is permitted, as is the use of other handsfree accessories. When driving we recommend that you use Voicemail 901 wherever possible, and that you listen to your messages when you are safely parked. If you must make a handsfree call when driving, keep it brief and use a handsfree cradle for your mobile phone.

Follow these simple guidelines and you can enjoy the benefits of being in touch while you travel safely:

  • Never use a handheld mobile phone or communications device for any reason while driving.
  • Use Voicemail 901 wherever possible by switching off your mobile phone and listen to your messages when you are safely parked.
  • If you have to make a handsfree call, make sure it is safe to do so and keep it brief.
  • Never send or read text messages while driving.
  • End handsfree calls that become difficult, distracting or stressful immediately.
  • When in doubt, switch it Off.
